Quality Lighting Reigns on the Vernon Family Farm

When the owners of the Vernon Family Farm discovered Barn Light Electric’s Chicken Wire Pendants back in 2020, they snapped up six of them for the farm store. We profiled the space, located in Newfields, New Hampshire, in this post.

The farm continues to grow as Nicole and Jeremiah Vernon, co-owners of the farm, recently completed a new pavilion next door to the farm store.

“We built the pavilion to shelter our walk-in freezers and coolers,” Jeremiah explains. “We also use the space for our catering kitchen to cook our weekly dinners which bring thousands of folks to the farm every year.” The pavilion also includes a bar where guests can sit and enjoy a sip and a bite.

The colors, materials, and fixtures of the new space all pay homage to the history of the property while enhancing the creative vision of the farm. The timbers were milled in Maine and the cedar shakes match the early 1800s blacksmith shop that house the store and office.

Buying American-made products is important to the couple so they returned to Barn Light Electric for lighting the new pavilion.

“In an age where globalism reigns supreme, USA-made products are harder and harder to find,” Jeremiah says. “The quality and attention to detail of Barn Light fixtures makes working with them enjoyable. The color options and ability to customize most all of the features of the light allow us to design the perfect piece.”

The couple chose the Laramie Wall Sconce to highlight the gable ends of the barn which customers see first as they approach the space. These handcrafted wall lights are customized with 16″ shades, a Barn Red finish, heavy-duty cast guards, and frosted glass.

“The red finish is a color with historical significance to New England as this was an agricultural community with barns throughout the landscape,” Jeremiah notes. “The shades needed to be substantial enough not to be dwarfed by the 8×10 beams but not too gangly on the gable end. The heavy-duty guard adds a layer a protection and gives the fixtures an industrial feel.”

For additional accent lighting within the space, the couple chose the Canal SoHo Sconce in a bright Sunflower finish color with a contrasting Galvanized mounting. These American-made sconces are crafted from commercial-grade metal to stand up to traffic in commercial spaces like the farm.

“Because we needed six of these in a relatively small space, I didn’t want anything too large,” Jeremiah explains. “The relatively simple and sleek design means they do not take up excessive space, but I love the whimsical feel of them. They are playful and bright.” He adds that the Sunflower finish is bright, cheerful, and natural — perfect characteristics for the farm.

“It is the color of summer at its finest,” Jeremiah notes. “It doesn’t feel excessive or over enhanced. The Galvanized mount provides that industrial, raw feeling. I don’t like things that look overly polished or manicured, and this finish speaks to that handmade feel.” Once installed, he adds, the lights look exactly as the couple imagined and customers rave about them.

“They provide the perfect balance of whimsy and playfulness while grounding the pavilion in place,” Jeremiah says. “The craftmanship is evident and the design creates a sense of history and knowledge only time can provide. Well done!”
