Featured Customer | Classic Barn Pendants for a Cottage Renovation Down Under

In the midst of renovating her 1930s-era cottage in western Australia, today’s Featured Customer Kathy was faced with a search for lighting. She started on Ebay looking for vintage barn lights, made the leap to Pinterest, and voila — she found Barn Light Electric!

“I was building an extension onto my cottage in Fremantle,” Kathy explains, “so I searched for lights that had the classic feel of the original part of the house but had the clean, modern, and sharp style I wanted to integrate in the new extension.” Kathy’s renovations included a change in the floor plan that transformed the kitchen into two bathrooms and the living area into a bedroom. She then added on a large room which features a new, combination kitchen, dining, and living area.

Once on Pinterest Kathy fell in love with the Ivanhoe® Union Warehouse Porcelain Pendants in creamy jadite for her new kitchen. The cool green color picks up the same shade in the pebbles in her terrazzo tiles.

“I love the style and colour,” Kathy says. “I wanted features that would lift those tones from the tiles.” Porcelain lighting is a great choice for kitchens that endure steam, temperature swings, and even a bit of sauce splashed about now and then.ivanhoe_union_porcelain_pendant_jadite.jpg

All of our porcelain enamel lights, including Goodrich® goosenecks, Benjamin® stem mount pendants, and Wheeler™ wall sconces, are created by our own craftsmen who hand spin the shade from a flat disc of commercial grade steel. The shade is coated with two layers of porcelain enamel glass, available in nine beautiful colors, then baked in a special porcelain oven that reaches temperatures of 1,600 degrees. This process creates the highly durable and glossy finish that makes porcelain so desirable. The finish will never fade and all it takes is a simple soap-and-water cleanup to bring the finish back to its original shiny condition.

“The lights are such a feature of the room, more so than any other fitting, and work so well,” Kathy says. “It’s totally modern and classic at the same time. Just what I was looking for!” You can read more about Kathy’s remodeling efforts in her blog. Thanks for sharing Kathy!
