Sleek Barn Lights Bring Contemporary Flair to Coastal Home

The term “barn light” has become synonymous with the classic RLM warehouse shade first manufactured back in the 1930s and 40s. Once offered only in vintage green with a standard gooseneck arm, the barn light has evolved to function as much more than a farm light. Thanks to updated styles, finishes, and mountings, barn lights can take on an almost endless variety of looks.

While some homeowners and designers love the timeless look of the warehouse shade for traditional home styles, a sleek, shallow barn light can look right at home in more contemporary spaces.

Our friends Jeff and Mindy Wooster, of RTG Construction, specialize in modern coastal homes including their latest project just down the coast in Delray Beach, Florida. They turned to Barn Light Electric for barn lights with a contemporary flair.

“This home features a clean, all-white exterior so we wanted a small pop of color as an accent,” Mindy says. “The important factors for lighting were American-made fixtures, color selections, plus porcelain enamel as an option.”

Mindy selected nine Conoco Gooseneck Lights for the exterior of the new home. She customized these handspun wall lights with 10″ shades, a Graphite finish, and G34 gooseneck arms.

“We chose this light based on the contemporary shape being sleek and distinctive,” she notes. “I also liked the clean line of the straight gooseneck arm to complement the modern feel I was seeking.”

In the home’s entryway, Mindy needed a ceiling pendant to light the space. She found the Conoco Stem Mount Pendant Light which coordinated well with the exterior goosenecks.

Mindy customized this wet-rated pendant light with a 10″ shade finished in the same Graphite color as the gooseneck lights. She also specified an 18″ stem for the fixture. The porcelain enamel finish on both the pendant and the goosenecks will never fade even in our famous Florida sunshine. And maintenance is a simple, soap-and-water cleanup.

“The color and shape of the lights tied in well with the gray roofing and gray pavers on this home,” Mindy says. “They provided just the right coastal contemporary styling we were trying to achieve.”
