Barn Lights Capture Farmhouse Style in NJ Renovation

In the northern most corner of New Jersey, Cynthia and her family enjoy a rural lifestyle full of hiking, fishing, camping, and all that the great outdoors offers. Their comfortable farmhouse was brand new when they moved in 19 years ago but has undergone some much-needed renovations recently.

“We have taken our colonial out of the 1990s and updated our bathrooms, kitchen, and living spaces,” Cynthia says. Although Cynthia, who is married and the mother of six children, has a background in biochemistry, she follows her passion for home design and building and has handled much of the renovation work herself. When it came time to update the lighting in her home, Cynthia remembered a Barn Light Electric ad she’d seen in a magazine years before.

“We love the farmhouse look very much and living on a farm plays nicely into that theme,” she notes, adding that their home has a touch of the rustic/industrial look. Cynthia envisioned barn lighting as the perfect accent to her remodeling efforts.

In the master bathroom, the space underwent a complete gut right down to the studs. Cynthia bid goodbye to the soaking tub and flower wallpaper and hello to a 16-foot vaulted ceiling with a skylight. She replaced the “sad little track lighting” her original builder installed with two handcrafted Bomber Gooseneck Lights. She customized these gooseneck barn lights with 15″ shades and, as a surprise to her New York Yankee-loving husband, a Navy finish.

“The 15″ shades were perfect for me to fit in the space over the very large glass shower,” Cynthia explains. “And it was a wonderful surprise for my husband to have a blue that matches his favorite team!” The wall lights are supported by G24 gooseneck arms finished in the same Navy color as the shades.

The sunroom is a recent addition and a pair of galvanized gooseneck lights add to the home’s farmhouse style. These Seaside Gooseneck Lights feature 12″ wavy shades that reflect light downward onto the seating area below. Cynthia admits to a weakness for the galvanized look.

“I use plumber’s piping for handles in a lot of my barn door builds,” she says. “I just can’t get enough of mixing the two materials — wood and metal — perfect!”

Cynthia’s most recent project, which has gotten plenty of accolades on her Instagram feed, is a wall unit she built and customized for her entryway. Two years ago, Cynthia had purchased a Barn Light Mini Eclipse Wall Sconce for another project that didn’t pan out. As she was building the new unit, the light bulb went off in her head.

“I had one of these wall sconces and I hoped you still made it because now I needed another one,” she says. “I ordered it and it matches perfectly! They look amazing. I literally cannot stop walking by and turning them on. We had company over one weekend and they fell in love with these lights.”

These mini wall sconces are handcrafted in our Florida facility and are customized with a Barn Red finish and G33 mini straight arms.

“I just love this product. The colors are deep and gorgeous,” Cynthia says. “The finish is beautiful and installation was easy for my electrician. They make a statement in every room.”
