What is Gooseneck Lighting?

First made popular in the mid-1900s, gooseneck light fixtures are an iconic turn-of-the-century style of wall lighting. Known for the bent, swooping shape of their arms, gooseneck lights provide a unique vintage look reminiscent of the fixtures found on classic farmhouses and barns.

Their timeless appeal has sparked a revival in modern designs for both home and commercial use.  With a look and function slightly different from traditional wall sconces, the long gooseneck arm extends the light away from the building, providing a unique aesthetic and a wide spread of light. Historically used to illuminate large barn doors and entryways to workshops, many contemporary gooseneck lights are used to elevate the curb appeal of homes and businesses, along with additional interior applications.

Types of Gooseneck Light fixtures

Gooseneck fixtures and light shades are offered with various mounting options, sizes, and finishes. To appeal to décor sensibilities ranging from vintage to modern, typical finishes replicate the look of galvanized metal and include various colors of powder coat. Shades vary in width, height, color, and finish to match or contrast with the gooseneck arm, depending on individual preferences.

With hundreds of styles and customization options, you can mix and match the height, style, and material finish to match any interior or exterior design. Choose traditional incandescent or LED light options.

Rooms & Usage

Most gooseneck light fixtures are placed outside on homes, while storefronts and restaurants often use them for both interior and exterior lighting. Because of the resilient metal material and finishes, they can weather the elements in exterior use.

Gooseneck lights are most commonly found outside of the house, adorning barns, garages, and the entryways into the house. However, many designers include gooseneck lighting in interior applications. Common placements include:

  • Front porches
  • On garages
  • Kitchens
  • Mud rooms
  • Bathroom vanities

Because of the long, curved nature of the gooseneck arm, these lights can illuminate signs or shine at angles that standard ceiling pendants or wall lights cannot achieve. Be sure to shop of the best angle for your specific application, in or around your commercial space.
