Quality, American-Made Lighting Sets Tone for New Farmhouse Build

What does your dream retirement home look like? Some might envision a condo by the sea, while others pine for a tiny cabin tucked on a mountaintop with panoramic views. Nancy’s dream of a farmhouse situated on 210 acres in rural Missouri finally came true this year. Thanks to the ongoing pandemic and associated supply-chain issues, her dream home took two years to complete.

“This is a new, post-frame home constructed by Morton Buildings,” Nancy says. “Morton constructed the shell, and I acted as the general contractor to finish it out — something I’ve never done in my life.”

The 1800-square-foot ranch home features a large, open floor plan with two bedrooms. Once the shell was complete, Nancy set to work creating a modern farmhouse look for her new home. She selected Amish-style cabinetry made by Ozark Quality Kitchens and doors crafted by Freedom Wood Products, a local company in business for 100 years.

“My priorities for everything in the house was high-quality, American-made products,” she explains. “This is what led me to Barn Light Electric. I love the wide variety of styles, sizes, and colors.” For the open kitchen, dining, and living space, Nancy chose a variety of lights. The kitchen features two Round Schoolhouse Gooseneck Lights flanking the sink and three Wilcox Uplight Gooseneck Lights over the windows.

Nancy customized the Round Schoolhouse lights with opaque glass, a Cobalt Blue finish, and a G26 gooseneck arm. The Wilcox lights feature a 12″ shade, a Jadite finish, and the same G26 gooseneck arm.

“I like the Round Schoolhouse lights because they are just super cool looking and cast a soft light all around,” she says. “They extend out to cast light onto the counter, and I love the Cobalt Blue which helps add color to the space.”

Nancy used the same Round Schoolhouse and Wilcox Uplight Goosenecks in the living space and adjacent hallway. Thanks to the multiple options available, she chose a larger 16″ shade for the Wilcox fixtures. They sport the matching Cobalt Blue finish and G26 gooseneck arm.

“I was scared to select the 16″ size but they are perfect in the great room and hallway,” she notes. “The goosenecks illuminate the hallway perfectly and tie in with the rest of the house.” For her kitchen island, Nancy stayed in the Wilcox Uplight family and chose two cord-hung pendants to illuminate the space. She customized these handspun pendants with generous 20″ shades, a Jadite finish, and black cloth cords.

“The island is 10 feet long and two 20″ pendants are perfect!” Nancy says. “They provide great lighting over the island and fit in with the style of the other lights. The black cloth cord is classy, and I chose Jadite for some of the lights to make the kitchen stand out. I love the color and just had to fit it in somewhere!”

For the nearby pantry and laundry rooms, Nancy chose a more compact light due to space limitations. The Anchorage Bulkhead Wall Mount Light in a large size and Cobalt Blue finish adds the perfect amount of illumination and style even to these smaller spaces.

“I love the bulkhead lights in the pantry and laundry room because the rooms are too small for pendants or goosenecks,” she explains. “The large size Anchorage Bulkhead is the perfect fit for these rooms!”

Having conquered her role as GC on this build, Nancy is happy with how everything turned out. She loves the warm and cozy atmosphere she created with her lighting choices throughout the home.

“I want to thank Barn Light Electric and all the craftsmen who work there for providing beautiful, handcrafted lights that are made in the USA,” Nancy says. “I love the style, color, and beautiful quality of light that all my fixtures provide.”
