Q & A | Kitchen Reno Blends Vintage, Modern Details

If you’re a dedicated follower of the Barn Light Electric blog (we have great photos and plenty of inspiration!), you probably remember this post featuring a stunning bathroom renovation.

Amy, who writes the blog My Life From Home, was the master behind that eye-popping wall paper and gorgeous copper gooseneck lighting. Amy recently moved and has begun another round of renovations at her new place. We chat with her today about her latest project — her kitchen.

Q: How extensive was the remodeling of your kitchen?
A: We moved into our new home in November and the first thing we did was gut our kitchen. It was a dark and outdated room with pink tile, glazed cabinets, poor lighting, and broken appliances. Our goal was to lighten up the space with a fresh and modern take on classic cottage style which suits our family much better.

Q: What was important as you looked for lighting for the kitchen? American-made fixtures? Style? Color selection? Ease of customizing?
A: When looking for lighting, I knew I wanted something that would make an impact in the room! Our island is a custom piece made to fit our unique space, so the lighting over it needed to be dramatic. Task lighting for prepping food was a must. By using two light fixtures, it gave us plenty of the light we needed.

Q: Why did you choose schoolhouse lighting for over the island?
A: I always loved schoolhouse lights because of their vintage look, but also the sophistication they add to a room. When I saw that you could customize them with a brass stem, I knew I had to have them! They were the perfect combination of modern and vintage we wanted.

Q: And why the Primary Schoolhouse Stem Mount Pendant in particular?
A: The Schoolhouse Brass Stem Mount fit beautifully with the cottage style we designed and tied in nicely with the other brass touches we added throughout the kitchen.

Q: Why did you go with the Weathered Brass finish on these?
A: Since the bones of the kitchen were white, such as the cabinets and back splash, the weathered brass added a lot of warmth to the space and kept it from appearing too sterile.

Q: Now that your lights are up, what do you like best about them?
A: There is so much I love about our new lights. We love the warmth of the brass paired with the large white globes. It’s a timeless design and the focal point of our new kitchen.
