Barn Lights Adorn Award-Winning Modern Farmhouse

If you checked out our year-end blog posts on our favorite spaces from 2017, you’ll see that the farmhouse trend made a strong showing. People love the rustic yet modern look of a contemporary farmhouse — lived in, yet lovely, with plenty of texture and character.

Today’s featured customer, Jen from Sylvania, Ohio, built the modern farmhouse of her dreams accented with barn lights inside and out. The home was recently awarded Single Family Home of the Year by the Home Builder’s Association.

“Our builder put our home up through our local HBA and we won!” Jen says. “We built on a family farm and wanted to stay true to the farmhouse design but have modern details to reflect our family of five.” The couple used local vendors and American-made products as much as possible throughout the build.

“We kept the exterior of our home clean and simple,” she notes. “We wanted to use black lights that popped off the white board-and-batten siding. Jen chose the All Weather Gooseneck Farm Light for the exterior in a variety of sizes.

“There are 11″ shades over the windows on the front of the house, plus one over the entry door,” Jen explains. She customized these handcrafted lights with a Black finish and a G16 straight gooseneck arm.

These gooseneck barn lights are part of our Discount Lighting collection which offers lower prices on many popular styles. They are crafted from the same high quality materials as our standard barn lights but are available with slightly fewer customizing options.

For the garage, Jen chose larger 17″ shades but stayed with the Black finish and straight gooseneck arms.

“We used black for all of the fixtures in the home so these are a nice complement,” she notes. “I liked that there were so many different arms and shade sizes to choose from. They are timeless and simple yet make a huge statement especially on the outside of the house.”

Jen chose the matching All Weather Farm Light Stem Mount to install in the peak of the front porch so it would have the same look and feel as the gooseneck lights. This wet-rated pendant features a 17″ shade.

For her master bathroom, Jen again chose the All Weather Gooseneck Light. The Black finish on these 13″ shades coordinates well with the gray-and-white tile floor and other black hardware in the space.

Giving a nod to vintage lighting, Jen chose the 18″ Benjamin Deep Bowl Stem Mount Pendant to highlight the dining room table. This antique pendant features a classic Vintage Green porcelain enamel finish with a Galvanized stem. This was a one-of-a-kind light from the Barn Light collection, but a similar look can be achieved with the Wilcox Deep Bowl Pendant Light.

“We purchased this light way in advance because it was a vintage light,” Jen says. “I wanted our home to feel cozy and welcoming. When I saw this light and it was green, it had to go in our dining room. We’re a John Deere family so there is always something green in our home.”

Love this house! We are building a house and our tastes are similar! What color is the front door? We’re having a black entry door as well and this color is exactly what is in my head.
